Unilever faced a big crisis after its brand Dollar Shave Club was found to be advertising on the pornography website Pornhub.
Dollar Shave Club is an American company, purchased by Unilever Global in 2016 for $ 1 billion (£ 773 million), providing razors and personal hygiene products, and delivering them to customers on a monthly basis by mail.
Unilever vowed to ban its brands from advertising on any porn websites, after the company spokesperson explained that the Dollar Shave Club brand was operationally independent and the parent company was unaware of the campaign at the time of launch.
“This type of content is very worrying and we will ensure that none of our brands are posted on Pornhub or any other pornographic sites again.” company spokesperson Added.
Discussing the decision, the brand’s executive creative director, Matt Knapp, told Australian marketing site Mi3 in May: “There was a strategic reason why we went there. We are very much about having guys’ backs. We like to think that we’re looking out for guys. It’s no secret that guys go there; we turn up where guys are going to be.”
It is noteworthy that Pornhub uses marketing extensively to develop its brand identity that relies on pornography.
